[ the camera feed turns on, a black figure rushes forward, his back toward the camera/pokegear. in the distance is a bright light (look! Cyndaquil's evolving!). Squall stops before kneeling down, head turned away from the bright light. Then the light fades ]

Cynda?

[ Squall's head drops (nope, no evolution for you today, Mr. Broodypants). He shakes his head before speaking up, his tone dry ]

You are... something. Just when I thought you'd...

[ He sighs before he falls onto the ground with a loud thud. He groans, staring up at the fire-type that is now sitting on his stomach with arms crossed and head back and forth from side to side ]

Quil Quil! Cyn Quil Da Quil, Cynda. Cynda?

Right. (Let's pretend I understand that.)

[ The SeeD scoffs before standing up, his pokemon still in his arms before heading over to reach his pack (and his pokegear). ]

Are you guys... supposed to want to evolve?

[ Squall eyes his starter warily just as the feed cuts ]

[ he sighs and nods his head ]

Yeah. That's it entirely.

I didn't know that evolution was even optional. I figured that they would want to be stronger.

Maybe he is broken.

[ Squall's lips twitch at the thought and the tired look on his face seems to fade just for a second ]

You can't really get a new one, can you? [She cocks her head a bit, eyes focusing on Cyndaquil.]

[ The Cyndaquil just stares back at the female on the screen (Cyndaquil, Cynda DaDa Quill! Cynda, Quil Da Cyn Quil CynDa! Quill Quill!) ]

[She furrows her brows, now talking to the Cyndaquil.]

Now why are you so excited?

[ Squall shakes his head, lifting an eyebrow ]

Are you going to try and talk to it, too, Suzuki?

[Oh god it's bad enough that she talks to hers]

[ lip twitch, Suzuki ]

[Saw that.]

[There will be some giggles heard.]

Not all pokemon want to evolve, Squall. Some like to stay the way they are while others want to go through evolution.

Apparently, your Cyndaquil isn't ready to evolve just yet. Right, Cyndaquil?

Then how is it supposed to get stronger?

By leveling them up, of course! Evolution is only one step in becomming stronger, but it isn't the only way. Just by training your pokemon, they will level up and become stronger. Some even learn new abilities that might not have been possible through evolution. Maybe your Cyndaquil is waiting to learn a specific ability before it decides to evolve.

[She'll just giggle at the last part of the message.]

Oh, Squall. You really should have more faith in your Cyndaquil. He might be silly, but he might smarter than you realize. Trust me, pokemon are more than just ordinary animals or pets. My Chansey has surprised me more times than I can count. I'm sure Cyndaquil will surprise you just as much soon.

True, but I wasn't asking him to be lazy or anything like that. I did ask him to keep an eye on you and to call me when you're heading to Violet. I don't think it really counts as a being a bad influence on him. Just being friendly towards him and his trainer.

[And speaking of heading to Violet...]

Oh and about Violet, have you decided to leave Cherrygrove City yet? I believe we did talk about exploring the Dark Cave together a few days ago.

An "it"? Don't Cyndaquils have genders? I know some pokemon are genderless, but I think your Cyndaquil is a male pokemon.

Some Pokemon prefer to remain in their unevolved forms. A member of my team purposefully withheld her own evolution for quite some time... but recently decided that she was ready.

In some ways, yes... Though the Breeder's Manual does mention that unevolved Pokemon will learn more powerful attacks much sooner.

So... it's wiser to keep them unevolved if I want more power?

I think it is best to cooperate with your Pokemon. True power can only be achieved through harmony between the two of you.

That's just weird. Alexander and Elida let themselves evolve.
